AS I SEE IT September 19: Helping for the Holidays

Pro Wrestling: Between the Sheets

It was a yearly tradition on this blog that... in keeping
with the season of light and the season of the Christchild,
AS I SEE IT would discuss how the independent wrestling
community reached out to those in need.

Independent promotions held a wide variety of events to
benefit various food pantries, fundraisers for homeless or
domestic violence shelters, and that provided funds to
efforts benefiting those suffering from cancer, heart
disease, natural disasters, veteran's charities, local
natural disaster cleanup/relief, other community
efforts...and lots and lots of Toys for Tots drives.

Then COVID happened....

It put a stop to those events in 2020. Many communities
suffered as a result.

The last pre-pandemic year, 2019, saw independent
professional wrestling helping the hundreds of communities
in which it runs events during the Holiday season. There
were 130 such events listed below that did the following:

* Raised at least $140,348 in cash donations for
community-based organizations helping those suffering
homelessness or domestic violence, suffering from cancer,
heart disease, the effects of accidents, for veteran's
charities, and many other community efforts.

* Collected 6,037 pounds (that's over THREE
) of canned and non-perishable foods for area food
banks, community organizations, plus an additional 700
pounds of dog and cat food for local shelters.

* Gathered 110 winter coats, five plus bags of clothes, 100
sets of socks, winter gloves, scarves and hand warmers.

* Gathered 7,910 toys for Toys for Tots, Salvation
Army, and other similar local and regional programs.

In addition to those numbers, Master P, owner of House of
Glory Wrestling, donated what was shown by members of New
York's Toys for Tots campaign to be a A COMMERCIAL SIZED
TRUCK full of toys
to the New York Toys for Tots
campaign. The video, also posted on House of Glory's social
media on December 17, 2019, showed the boxes and boxes of
toys that were donated.

Then COVID happened. The world as we knew it stopped
beginning in March 2020.

Over 1 million people died in the United States alone, and
an estimated 6.5 million people worldwide.

A handful of independent promotions ran holiday charity
events in 2020 and 2021, but at best only a small fraction
of the number that did so before the pandemic.

Three years later, the independent promotions that survived
the worst of the pandemic are starting to get up and running

So it's time to ask if those reading this blog can send me
any information on holiday themed charity shows scheduled
from now through the New Year at my
account or to message me through my Facebook at

I'll post the events here weekly, as well as how they are
able to help their communities.

If your local independent isn't holding such an event, ask
why not, and if not...offer to help them organize such an
event with a local charity. Don't worry that such an event
may not collect a lot of canned food, toys, or raise a lot
of money.

Some independent promotions are bigger than others and have
fan bases larger than others. But there's a Jewish proverb
out of the Talmud: if you save one life... it as is if you
saved the world. So using the logic of that teaching...if
you feed one family, make one kid happy...give one person a
warm've done so it for everyone. In an
interesting side note: the same proverb is cited in the
Koran. Not to mention that Jesus also said if you did for
one of the least of mine, you did it for me....proving that
in all the great Western traditions, that EVERY effort to do
good as is important as the other.

Blackwood versus Bennett for ESW Gold

Two friends turned foes will fight for ESW Heavyweight

After celebrating its 20th anniversary in August, Empire
State Wrestling returns to Buffalo RiverWorks for
“Overdrive” on October 8. Overdrive will feature one of the
most anticipated matches in ESW this year when ESW
Heavyweight Champion “The Aesthetic Crippler” Kevin
Blackwood puts the title on the line against “The Remix”
Kevin Bennett.

The Blackwood-Bennett match was originally scheduled to
occur in March. However, Bennett pulled out of the match due
to a training injury. Throughout the year, Bennett clamored
for the title opportunity he previously earned after
returning from his injury. Blackwood granted his request at
the conclusion of August’s show, thus setting the stage for
Overdrive’s main event.

Scheduled to appear at Overdrive include:

Ilio DiPaolo Memorial Cup winner “Invincible” Vince Valor
and Frankie Feathers will team up against American Strong

New ESW Interstate Champion “The Prize” Alec Price

ESW Tag Team Champions High Seas

The debut of Beyond Wrestling tag team Waves and Curls

To Infinity & Beyond (ex-World Wrestling Entertainment star
Colin Delaney and ex-Ring of Honor star Cheech)

“Courageous” Christina Marie

The return of “Blue Thunder” Jay Freddie
Former ESW Tag Team Champion Gregory Iron

Stay tuned to ESW’s social media platforms for more match
and appearance announcements
Tickets will soon be available for purchase at
