On this day 25 years ago, World Wrestling Federation
Entertainment, Inc., announced the acquisition of World
Championship Wrestling from AOL Time Warner.
Vince McMahon’s company put the final nail in the coffin for
WCW and bought the name WCW, its extensive video library,
and the majority of the intellectual property rights related
to all their pay-per-views, television shows, and wrestling
names.
“This acquisition is the perfect creative and business
catalyst for our company,” said WWF CEO Linda McMahon at the
time, while WWF President and Chief Operating Officer Stuart
Snyder added that the acquisition was a strategic move and
called it “a perfect fit.”
The original press release said that new WCW TV shows would
air on TNN in the future, but none of that happened and the
WCW brand was killed off after the botched invasion
storyline ended.
