of the most tickets sold, active full-time promotions, and
events in big arenas in the sport’s history. In each
installment, we’ll show you the greatest and most high-
quality surviving footage of what made the area so

Known for its wild mayhem, over-the-top stipulations, and
colorful personalities, some purists of the time decried
Memphis as just going too far, but in many ways it was well
ahead of its time. What Jerry Jarrett and Jerry Lawler built
in the WMC-TV studios every Saturday morning and Mid-South
Coliseum each Monday night served as a crystal ball to where
wrestling was headed – violence & bloodshed in their most
personal rivalries, personality profiles and music videos to
establish talent, and dozens of future global megastars
passing through their doors. It’s no wonder why Memphis
defied the odds and out-lasted every other territory of its
era. From the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s, these are the most
