AS I SEE IT December 15: A call to stand with those in need ...with indies doing their part to help for the holidays

Happy Holidays everyone! We're in the last weeks of 2025, in
the season of light and the season of the Christchild...

Matthew's Gospel reminds us of how Jesus, Mary, and Joseph
were refugees, fleeing the decree of King Herod to kill
first-born male children in Bethlehem, and were forced to
find sanctuary in a foreign land. The story serves as a far
too timely connection of Jesus's experience as a child
refugee with today's immigrants and asylum seekers; with its
themes of vulnerability, God's call to welcome strangers,
helping those in need, and overall solidarity with the
displaced seemingly ripped the images we see in today's
newspapers, news broadcasts and social media feeds.

We may not individually be able to change national policy or
move the hearts of the mighty, but we can help those in our
midst during this season.

The last two weeks within that Season of Light have been the
heart of that Season with 37 separate events taking
place in 17 states and 1 Canadian province  two weeks
ago. THIS week's 24 scheduled events include America's
largest single toy collection event...the Stuff The Bus
Panama City 14th annual Toy Drive in Panama City, FL with
minimum goal of 10,000 toys donated by
Panama City, FL community businesses and individuals. The
Drive is a part of Revolt Ministries' work, along with The
Guardian's Legacy wrestling promotion in Panama City, FL.

For the last ten years, AS I SEE IT has reported on how the
independent wrestling community has reached out to those in
need. Independent promotions throughout the United States
and Canada have held events to help their communities during
the Holiday season through wrestling shows, Comic-Cons,
playing video games, 10-day marathons sitting on top of a
trailer, bowling parties, online trivia contests, chicken
BBQ's, portrait sittings, Twitch streams, and a dozen other
means. There are still others with unique relationships like
Pittsburgh's Enjoy Wrestling has with Planned Parenthood,
where Planned Parenthood both sponsors Enjoy Wrestling, and
uses those shows as an outreach opportunity for the women's
reproductive health care services the agency provides.

Each week during these ten seasons of giving, I've posted
about those events, and how they helped their communities.
Some promotions worry that their event may not collect a lot
of canned food, toys, or raise a lot of money. Some
independent promotions are bigger than others and have fan
bases larger than others.  But there's a proverb out of the
Talmud: if you save one life... it as is if you saved the
world. Using the logic of that teaching...if you feed one
family, make one kid happy, give one person a warm
coat....you've done so for everyone. In an interesting side
note: the same proverb is cited in the Koran. Not to mention
that Jesus also said if you did for one of the least of
mine, you did it for me....proving that in all the great
Western traditions, that EVERY effort to do good as is
important as the other.

In all these events over these ten years, these promotions
asked fans to do one small thing. Just "one small thing. But
that "one small thing" meant the world to someone you will
never meet.

One can of soup meant that someone was fed for a meal. One
box of rice meant that a family was fed for a week or more.

One warm coat meant an older person won't shiver
uncontrollably when they walk to the market or to a doctor's
appointment.

One toy meant that a child is allowed a moment of innocence
and joy, often the same child who has gone through fear and
deprivation for far too long.

One "small thing" that was anything but small.

It's important because even the smallest act of kindness can
change a life.

The Holidays this year have been a time where a 40-day
government shutdown resulted in up to 42 million Americans
not receiving some or all of their SNAP benefits on time.
The effects of this shutdown and the resulting budget
legislation will continue through the Holidays and beyond;
with the new budget legislation resulted in 4 million being
off SNAP benefits permanently.

All this means men, women, children, and folks beyond the
binary are going hungry. It means that at a time like this,
every can, every box, every can, box or bag of food may be
the only thing that keeps people from starvation.

Some promotions hesitate to hold Toys for Tots collections,
food drives, or other charity events because they won't know
what to do, aren't that big, don't have the fan base that
other independent promotions have, are afraid that no one
will donate and they'll look bad. The smallest event can
inspire others to act by your example. As an example: many
northeast Toys for Tots efforts were inspired by the New
Jersey-based United Wrestling Coalition, who's done Toys for
Tots collections for the last 31 years. Thousands of toys
for thousands of children came out of that one act thirty
years ago... one act. That came out of a mom-and-pop husband
and wife owned and run independent promotion who have needs
themselves, have health challenges and rely simply on hard
work, dedication and the goodness of their fanbase.

With the current regime in Washington, far, far more of
these acts of kindness will be needed this Holiday season
from every private source possible to help the hungry, the
sick, the cold, the homeless, LGBT people, sexual/domestic
violence victims, animal welfare, and too many more
causes.

Thus far, 146 indie promotions in 28 states
and 5 Canadian provinces have scheduled a total of
215 shows and events through the end of the Holiday
Season.

Total 2025 contributions as of December 13 are
