It was 11 years ago this Friday. It seems like yesterday,
and at the same time, it seems like 11 lifetimes ago. My
mom, Joan Magee, died on December 5, 2014, at Samaritan
Hospice in Mt. Holly, NJ. She was 82 years old. She died
after a recurrence of breast cancer she'd beaten once in
2007.

She went to the ER of Virtua Hospital back on October 10 of
that year, telling us of shortness of breath while sleeping.
That visit involved a cardiac window being put in to drain
fluid surrounding her heart that caused the shortness of
breath, which saved her life. She came back from that as
chipper as an 82-year-old woman can, even complimenting me
on my clams and pasta I made for her and my brother one of
the first nights after she came home on October 21...saying
it was better than hers.

But she got sick again that Black Friday, and we took her to
Virtua Hospital. She was told a week later that she had a
recurrence of her breast cancer, and that nothing could be
done. At that point, she told my brother when we arrived
that day at the hospital that she had had enough...and was
willing to just be made comfortable.  She was taken to
Samaritan Hospice in Mt. Holly, but after being given
morphine and an anti-anxiety drug (which she asked the
comfort care doctor for before transport), she pretty much
went to sleep; although she seemed to know where she was
during the ambulance ride to Samaritan Hospice, and didn't
much care for the bumpy ride, grabbing my hand
pretty firmly at one point, as I sat with her.

My younger brother and I went home after she was checked in
there; but less than 90 minutes later, her condition
suddenly worsened to where we were called to rush back to
the hospice. We stayed overnight... and she passed away at
about 5:55 am; always, always, the Mom to the end...trying
to be sure we got some sleep.

It bookended things, because back when she went to the
emergency room the first time...after being stabilized; she
was actually asking us if we'd eaten...again, Mom first.

She was a great Mom, always worrying about her two grown
sons; teaching us to believe, to not give up, to be patient,
to do the right thing and care about others.

Anyone who'd like to do so in her memory, please send a
donation to the American Cancer Society, or volunteer for a
charity of your choice.

In a lot of ways, my doing this yearly Indies Helping For
The Holidays series of AS I SEE IT blogs is my way of
remembering her, and her teaching my brother and I to help
others; that...and the fact she absolutely LOVED, loved,
loved the Holidays, and loved when I helped with Kathy
Fitzpatrick's work with CZW and Toys for Tots.

For the last ten years, AS I SEE IT has reported on how the
independent wrestling community has reached out to those in
need. Independent promotions throughout the United States
and Canada have held events to help their communities during
the Holiday season through wrestling shows, Comic-Cons,
playing video games, 10-day marathons sitting on top of a
trailer, bowling parties, online trivia contests, chicken
BBQ's, portrait sittings, Twitch streams, and a dozen other
means.

Each week during these ten seasons of giving, I've posted
about those events, and how they helped their communities.
Some promotions worry that their event may not collect a lot
of canned food, toys, or raise a lot of money. Some
independent promotions are bigger than others and have fan
bases larger than others.  But there's a proverb out of the
Talmud: if you save one life... it as is if you saved the
world. Using the logic of that teaching...if you feed one
family, make one kid happy, give one person a warm
coat....you've done so for everyone. In an interesting side
note: the same proverb is cited in the Koran. Not to mention
that Jesus also said if you did for one of the least of
mine, you did it for me....proving that in all the great
Western traditions, that EVERY effort to do good as is
important as the other.

In all these events over these ten years, they asked fans to
do one small thing. Just "one small thing". But that "one
small thing" meant the world to someone you will never meet.

One can of soup meant that someone was fed for a meal. One
box of rice meant that a family was fed for a week or more.

One warm coat meant an older person won't shiver
uncontrollably when they walk to the market or to a doctor's
appointment.

One toy meant that a child is allowed a moment of innocence
and joy, often the same child who has gone through fear and
deprivation for far too long.

One "small thing" that was anything but small.

It's important because even the smallest act of kindness can
change a life.

The Holidays this year are a time where a 40 day government
shutdown resulted in up to 42 million Americans not
receiving some or all of their SNAP benefits on time. The
effects of this shutdown and the resulting budget
legislation will continue through the Holidays and beyond;
with the new budget legislation resulted in 4 million being
off SNAP benefits permanently.

All this means men, women, children, and folks beyond the
binary are been going hungry. It means that at a time like
this, every can, every box, every can, box or bag of food
may be the only thing that keeps people from starvation.

Some promotions hesitate to hold Toys for Tots collections,
food drives, or other charity events because they won't know
what to do, aren't that big, don't have the fan base that
other independent promotions have, are afraid that no one
will donate and they'll look bad. The smallest event can
inspire others to act by your example. As an example: many
northeast Toys for Tots efforts were inspired by the New
Jersey-based United Wrestling Coalition, who's done Toys for
Tots collections for the last 31 years. Thousands of toys
for thousands of children came out of that one act thirty
years ago... one act. That came out of a mom-and-pop husband
and wife owned and run independent promotion who have needs
themselves, have health challenges and rely simply on hard
work, dedication and the goodness of their fanbase.

With the current regime in Washington, far, far more of
these acts of kindness will be needed this Holiday season
from every private source possible to help the hungry, the
sick, the cold, the homeless, LGBT people, sexual/domestic
violence victims, animal welfare, and too many more
causes.

Thus far, 139 indie promotions in 28 states
and 5 Canadian provinces have scheduled a total of
205 shows and events through the end of the Holiday
Season.

This coming weekend of December 5th-7th weekend will be the
busiest weekend of the Holiday season for events with 34
separate events
taking place in 18 states and 1
Canadian province.
