AS I SEE IT November 17: The heart of indies helping for the holidays

With all the events of the last two weeks in the real world
that have involved disappointment in people we trusted
politically and socially (and those we never did), it's time
to devote this week's blog to writing about people being
kind to each other. I don't typically say it in this blog,
but you can't imagine how reassuring it is in the world of
2025...to see so many people still doing so much good for so
many.

In the United States, Thanksgiving is two weeks from
Thursday (Canadians are lucky....they already had
theirs...and with better weather).

For the last ten years, AS I SEE IT has reported on how the
independent wrestling community has reached out to those in
need. Independent promotions throughout the United States
and Canada have held events to help their communities during
the Holiday season through wrestling shows, Comic-Cons,
playing video games, 10-day marathons sitting on top of a
trailer, bowling parties, online trivia contests, chicken
BBQ's, portrait sittings, Twitch streams, and a dozen other
means.

Each week during those ten seasons of giving, I've posted
about those events, and how they helped their communities.
Some promotions worry that their event may not collect a lot
of canned food, toys, or raise a lot of money. Some
independent promotions are bigger than others and have fan
bases larger than others.  But there's a proverb out of the
Talmud: if you save one life... it as is if you saved the
world. Using the logic of that teaching...if you feed one
family, make one kid happy, give one person a warm
coat....you've done so for everyone. In an interesting side
note: the same proverb is cited in the Koran. Not to mention
that Jesus also said if you did for one of the least of
mine, you did it for me....proving that in all the great
Western traditions, that EVERY effort to do good as is
important as the other.

In all these events over these ten years, they asked fans to
do one small thing. Just "one small thing". But that "one
small thing" meant the world to someone you will never meet.

One can of soup meant that someone was fed for a meal. One
box of rice meant that a family was fed for a week or more.

One warm coat meant an older person won't shiver
uncontrollably when they walk to the market or to a doctor's
appointment.

One toy meant that a child is allowed a moment of innocence
and joy, often the same child who has gone through fear and
deprivation for far too long.

One "small thing" that was anything but small.

It's important because even the smallest act of kindness can
change a life.

The Holidays this year are a time where a 40 day government
shutdown has resulted in up to 42 million Americans not
receiving some or all of their SNAP benefits on time. The
effects of this shutdown and the resulting budget
legislation will continue through the Holidays and beyond...

All this means men, women, children, and folks beyond the
binary have been going hungry. It means that at a time like
this, every can, every box, every can, box or bag of food
may be the only thing that keeps people from starvation.

Prior to this year...in the last five non-COVID years
(excluding 2020 and 2021), the independents that have
provided information to this blog have raised $1,069,520
US
in cash donations, collected 53,544 pounds (nearly
27 tons)
of canned and non-perishable food and 58,964
toys
.... acts of kindness seemingly beyond measure.

Side note: this is the information I've been able to get
during those years from promotions, charities, and so on.
Inexplicably, there are promotions that don't provide ways
to be contacted, don't have functional social media, claim
not to know how much has been donated or contributed (or
even in two or three cases refused to disclose), and were
removed from this list because of that inability or
unwillingness to provide information. News flash, promoters:
getting publicity for doing good work isn't bragging or
doing something inappropriate. Yes, helping others for the
sake of helping others is its own reward. But reporting what
you do is a vital part of what you do...it's called
PROMOTING. It's also inspiring others by your example. As an
example: many northeast Toys for Tots efforts were inspired
by the New Jersey-based United Wrestling Coalition, who's
done Toys for Tots collections for the last 30 years.

Yet with the current regime in Washington, far, far more of
these acts of kindness will be needed this Holiday season
from every private source possible to help the hungry, the
sick, the cold, the homeless, LGBT people, sexual/domestic
violence victims, animal welfare, and too many more
causes.

Thus far, 126 indie promotions in 27 states
and 5 Canadian provinces have scheduled a total of
185 shows and events through the end of the Holiday
Season.

Total contributions as of November 13 are 766 toys,
