AS I SEE IT November 3: Pierre... Comcast, ESPN, and WWE PLEs, more WWE PR miscues...and helping for the holidays

Last Wednesday, Philadelphia lost a civic institution and a
big piece of its soul with the unexpected passing of WMMR DJ
Pierre Robert at age 70. Pierre was a gentle soul our region
was blessed to have him for over 40 years...bringing us joy
and kindness over the airwaves, giving generations in
Philadelphia the soundtrack of our lives. If there was a
concert taking place, or a new artist that needed publicity,
he was there. If there was a Philadelphia charity or a cause
that needed help, he was there, including MANNA's annual
Thanksgiving Pie In The Sky fundraiser sale, and Preston and
Steve's yearly Camp Out For Hunger.

I got to meet Pierre some 30 plus years ago, when he
interviewed me for a WMMR early Sunday morning public
service show, promoting a 1990 political demonstration/civil
disobedience actoon at the Nevada Test Site seeking to end
nuclear weapons testing. In person, he was everything people
heard on the air over more than 40 years: kind, welcoming,
sympathetic, and interested in what I had to say.

Pierre was an unapologetic supporter of causes he believed
in, yet was beloved and respected by people of all political
persuasions.

His last weekend was spent at a Hooters concert and sitting
in his beloved Rittenhouse Square with a cup of Columbé
coffee and a book simply watching the world go by.

After almost a month of dry weather in the Philadelphia
area, it poured last Thursday morning. It seemed to more
than a few on social media that even the cosmos was joining
plenty of Philadelphians in shedding some tears.

May the memory of Philadelphia's Greatest Citizen always be
a blessing and an inspiration to all of us. May we all live
with his sense of service to others and with his sense of
wonder and joy. For anyone reading this from the
Philadelphia area, let's honor Pierre by seeing that MANNA
sells out Pie In The Sky, and contributing a record amount
of food to Preston and Steve's Camp Out For Hunger this
year. I already contributed.

John Ourand of Puck reported via Awful Announcing that
Disney and Comcast “quietly” renewed their distribution
agreement earlier last month, keeping Disney-owned channels
including ABC, Disney+, Disney Channel, Disney Jr. Disney
XD, and the ESPN family of networks on Comcast’s Xfinity
cable systems without disruption. One small problem for
wrestling fans: there's still no change in things for those
of us who want to watch WWE PLEs via ESPN Unlimited. Despite
the new agreement, Xfinity customers like me still don't
have access to ESPN Unlimited. We can't even pay for it as
an add-on.

The Awful Announcing article reports that the delay is due
to work being done on the technical side of the Xfinity X1
platform to accommodate subscribers, according to their
source. The source of the Awful Announcing article did not
provide any timeline for the completion of the tech work.
However, Alex Sherman of CNBC says the hope is to have it
working by the end of the year.

In English, if you have Xfinity, don't expect to be watching
Survivor Series, without backdooring to Netflix through a
VPN or firestick on your smart TV (since VPNs are allegedly
banned by Xfinity), and "traveling" to England or somewhere
in Europe to allow you to watch via Netflix.

Meanwhile...in the latest WWE PR faux pas: after a series of
cryptic WWE promos showing men in dress shoes, which had
fans guessing it foreshadowed a return of a former talent,
it instead was nothing more than a trailer promoting
Wrestlemania 42 featuring Paul Levesque, Paul Heyman, Cody
Rhodes, Roman Reigns, CM Punk, and Brock Lesnar at a poker
table. Levesque acted as the narrator beside Paul Heyman
while Rhodes, Reigns, Punk, and Lesnar played poker.

Several things were obvious: those at the poker table were
all male, all white, and all middle-aged (particularly Brock
Lesnar looking very middle aged for the first time in
memory). Not Charlotte Flair...not Becky Lynch, nor Rhea
Ripley...nor Liv Morgan...nor Bayley...nor even Nicki Bella.
Forget Jay or Jimmy Uso, Bron Breaker, Bianca Belair, Montez
Ford, Blake Monroe, Chelsea Green, or Tiffany Stratton. So
there's the obvious obsession with middle-age, misogyny, the
racism....and Brock Lesnar. In case anyone forgot: Brock
Lesnar was listed 44 times in the Janel Grant
lawsuit, accused of abhorrent behavior, including asking
Janel Grant to urinate, shoot a picture of it, and send him
the picture, and asking her to fly interstate (cheating on
his wife/partner in the process) to engage in sex with her
because Vince McMahon said so. So much for the Holiday
spirit and good marketing.

The Holiday season of giving is here. The NCAA and the NFL
seasons are already halfway through. Christmas ads (and
Medicare Advantage ads) are slowly spreading all over my TV.
Mariah Carey is putting on her lipstick. That means that
wrestling indies need to start thinking about the season of
giving...NOW.

For the last ten years, AS I SEE IT has reported on how the
independent wrestling community reached out to those in
need. Independent promotions throughout the United States
and Canada held events to help their communities during the
Holiday season through wrestling shows, Comic-Cons, playing
video games,10-day marathons sitting on top of a trailer,
bowling parties, online trivia contests, chicken BBQ's,
portrait sittings, Twitch streams, and a dozen other means.

In all those events, they asked fans to do one small thing.
Just "one small thing". But that "one small thing" meant the
world to someone you will never meet.

One can of soup meant that someone was fed for a meal. One
box of rice meant that a family was fed for a week or more.

One warm coat meant an older person won't shiver
uncontrollably when they walk to the market or to a doctor's
appointment.

One toy meant that a child is allowed a moment of innocence
and joy, often the same child who has gone through fear and
deprivation for far too long.

One "small thing" that was anything but small.

It's important because even the smallest act of kindness can
change a life.

The Holidays this year are a time where the government
shutdown is about to result in up to 42 million Americans
not receiving some or all of their SNAP benefits in November
due to the current government shutdown. Oklahoma,
Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Illinois, are already
notifying recipients that November benefits will not be paid
at all if the shutdown isn't resolved.

The Administration is refusing to use contingency money
available to cover such situations, as well as natural
disasters. Even if there is a resolution, the "best case
scenario" proposed Trump budget as it exists will result in
4 million losing SNAP benefits. While judges have ordered
the funds released, we all know how this Administration
treats judicial orders it doesn't like.

That means children will go hungry. It means that at a time
like this, every can, every box, every can. box or bag of
food may be the only thing that keeps people from
starvation.

Prior to this year...in the last five non-COVID years
(excluding 2020 and 2021), the independents that have
provided information to this blog have raised $1,069,520
US
in cash donations, collected 53,544 pounds (nearly
27 tons)
of canned and non-perishable food and 58,964
toys
.... acts of kindness seemingly beyond measure.

Yet with the current regime in Washington, far, far more of
these acts of kindness will be needed this Holiday season
from every private source possible to help the hungry, the
sick, the cold, the homeless, LGBT people, sexual/domestic
violence victims, animal welfare, and too many more causes.
Indies, it's time to start planning what you can do NOW.

Fans, if your local indie hasn't scheduled or announced an
event or events for the Holiday season, ask them why. Better
yet, offer to help them organize one. It might be you that
needs help tomorrow.

109 indie promotions have scheduled a total of
160 shows and events through the end of the Holiday
Season.

Total contributions as of October 29 are 126 toys,
112 backpacks/sets of school supplies, 2 boxes of
bedclothes/linens 20 Halloween outfits, 18,550 pounds
