AS I SEE IT

We're about to get another installment of Counter-
Programming: the Musical tomorrow, as AEW does its yearly
Title Tuesday Dynamite, owing to Wednesday's MLB National
League Division playoff coverage on TBS and NHL opening
night on TNT. AEW will load up Dynamite, given the Title
Tuesday label.
NXT is responding by scheduling a PLE-quality NXT/TNA
Showdown episode of NXT on CW tomorrow. The title of the
show is a story onto itself...but more on that later. NXT
General Manager Ava announced the event on NXT No Mercy,
featuring two Survivor Series-style matches, with four NXT
stars taking on four TNA stars, one featuring the men and
one featuring the women; with the men’s NXT team Ricky
Saints, Trick Williams, Myles Borne and Jevon Evans vs. a
TNA team of Mike Santana, Frankie Kazarian, Moose, and Leon
Slater, and the women's NXT team of Jacy Jayne, Sol Ruca,
Jaida Parker and Lola Vice vs. a TNA women's team of Jelani
Jordan, Jessica McKay and Cassie Lee, plus Mara Shade.
In addition, DarkState will take on The Hardys in a TNA tag
title-for-NXT tag title match with both the titles on the
line. Ostensibly, to prevent a situation as took place with
the last NXT/TNA title vs. title match, everyone "will be
barred from ringside and winners must be crowned".
I also have a bridge in Brooklyn for sale.
WWE has dropped the boat...BADLY...every time it has tried
to do an invasion angle. It botched the WCW and ECW
invasion. For anyone not a long-time fan, the WCW/ECW
Invasion angle was a storyline in the WWF from March to
November 2001, after Vince McMahon's purchase of WCW and ECW
with WCW and ECW talent as The Alliance, WWF. The angle was
a "dream scenario" for fans , but it badly failed due to the
absence of top WCW talent, and a focus (as always) on
McMahon family drama rather than the storyline...and the
fact that Vince McMahon would never really let The Alliance
get over, even so WWF could eventually beat a worthy
opponent, ending (of course) with The Alliance's losing to
Team WWF at Survivor Series.
Then, there was the NeXus angle in 2010 storyline where
rookies from the first season of NXT, including Wade
Barrett, Justin Gabriel, Heath Slater, Michael Tarver, David
Otunga, Skip Sheffield, Darren Young, and Bryan (Daniel
Bryan) Danielson in the initial group, with CM Punk, Husky
Harris (Bray Wyatt), and Michael McGillicutty (Curtis Axel).
It started out great with NeXus invading Monday Night Raw
jumping John Cena and disrupting a live RAW in a "battle for
dominance" Again...Vince McMahon wouldn't allow NeXus to get
over sufficiently and the NeXus roster couldn't stay
together for long enough for the angle to do what it easily
could have and made the money it could have made.
And...if that wasn't bad enough...Invasion, the original
name used for this Wednesday's NXT special, angered Israeli
fans. They pointed out the decision to schedule an event
with such a name on October 7 is insensitive, given that the
date is the second anniversary of the Hamas terror attack
that saw 1,200 killed. An article in Israel Hayom claimed:
“The choice of the name and the date – a day when Israel
commemorates the memory of the massacre from October 7, 2023
– is viewed as extreme insensitivity. The term Invasion, on
such a sensitive date, which directly recalls the
infiltration of Hamas terrorists into the southern
communities and the mass killings of Israelis and Americans,
raises questions about who in the organization is
responsible for this preposterous decision.”
In addition, an article in the Jewish Chronicle also drew
attention to similarities with the V in the show's logo (one
originally used in the 2001 WCW/ECW Invasion),
unintentionally resembles the downward-facing red triangle
used as a Hamas symbol.
Finally, as of last Tuesday, the name of the event was
changed to Showdown. Obviously, the October 7 date was a
coincidence. The only thing WWE was considering is to how to
stick it to AEW on that date. But with WWE having such
strong ties to the current regime, being perceived as anti-
Israel is a no-no. So, WWE needed to change the event's
name, even with one week to go.
But it's yet one more example of many...that anytime WWE has
tried to counter-program AEW, bad things seem to happen.
Matches announced for tomorrow night's NXT include Survivor
Series-style elimination tag matches between the two
promotions in both the men’s and women’s division with Team
NXT (Ricky Saints, Trick Williams, Je'Von Evans, and Myles
Borne) vs. Team TNA (Mike Santana, Frankie Kazarian, Moose,
and Leon Slater) and Team NXT (Jacy Jayne, Jaida Parker, Sol
Ruca, and Lola Vice) vs. Team TNA (Kelani Jordan, Jessie
McKay, Cassie Lee, and Mara Sadè), NXT Tag Team Champions
Darkstate vs TNA Tag Team Champions The Hardys for both sets
of titles, and Ethan Page vs. Mustafa Ali for the NXT North
American title.
AEW counters with TNT Champion Kyle Fletcher defending
against Kyle O’Reilly, Orange Cassidy vs. PAC, TBS Champion
Mercedes Mone defends against "a wrestler from Florida", The
Demand (Ricochet, Bishop Kaun and Toa Liona) vs. Hurt
Syndicate (MVP, Bobby Lashley and Shelton Benjamin) in a
street fight, AEW World Tag Team Champions Brodido (Brody
King and Bandido) vs. Kazuchika Okada & Konosuke Takeshita
in a Double Jeopardy match, Jon Moxley vs. Tomohiro Ishii,
Jurassic Express in action, and a Samoa Joe/Hangman Page
face-to-face segment.
Last Tuesday, AEW announced Blood and Guts for AEW Dynamite
on Wednesday, November 12 at the First Horizon Coliseum in
Greensboro, NC, with full names yet to be announced, but
featuring members of the Triangle of Madness vs. Jamie
Hayter and Queen Aminata.
WBD apparently was happy with the HBOMAX PPV debut, because
WrestleDream is being preceded by another AEW Saturday
Tailgate Brawl on TNT/HBO MAX. Remember that the pre-show on
many other providers will feature canned promos in lieu of
pre-showmatches.
The season of giving has already begun. The NCAA and the NFL
are in full swing, pumpkin spice everything is here, Spooky
season is on, and Mariah Carey is defrosting. That means
that wrestling indies need to start thinking about the
season of giving...NOW.
Over last year's fall and Holiday season...and for the last
ten years, AS I SEE IT has reported on how the independent
wrestling community reached out to those in need.
Independent promotions throughout the United States and
Canada held events to help their communities during the
Holiday season through wrestling shows, Comic-Cons, playing
video games,10-day marathons sitting on top of a trailer,
bowling parties, online trivia contests, chicken BBQ's,
portrait sittings, Twitch streams, and a dozen other means.
In all those events, they asked fans to do one small thing.
Just "one small thing". But that "one small thing" meant the
world to someone you will never meet.
One can of soup meant that someone was fed for a meal. One
box of rice meant that a family was fed for a week or more.
One warm coat meant an older person won't shiver
uncontrollably when they walk to the market or to a doctor's
appointment.
One toy meant that a child is allowed a moment of innocence
and joy, often the same child who has gone through fear and
deprivation for far too long.
One "small thing" that was anything but small.
Just take a look at the faces of the thousands of children
given toys in southern Florida by Stuff The Bus in Florida,
or in South Jersey by United Wrestling Coalition in New
Jersey, or throughout the Northeast Major Wrestling Figure
Podcast and Ringside Collectibles, or ask the survivors of
domestic violence helped with sanctuary and counseling by
Women of Nations Eagles Nest Shelter because Midwest All
Star Wrestling presented the annual Women of Nations Grand
Slam, or the 1,000 families fed by an effort of Southern
California indies, or thousands of other families provided
toys, winter jacket, or cans of food through Detroit Warm,
Detroit Goodfellows, and Covenant House from a Juggalo
Championship Wrestling show
Given the current regime in Washington, far, far more help
will be needed from every private source possible to help
the hungry, the sick, the cold, the homeless, LGBT people,
sexual/domestic violence victims, animal welfare, and too
many more causes. Indies, it's time to start planning what
you can do NOW.
Fans, if your local indie hasn't scheduled or announced an
event or events for the Holiday season, ask them why
not....SOON. Better yet, offer to help them organize one. It
might be you that needs help tomorrow.
76 indie promotions have scheduled a total of
115 shows and events through the end of the Holiday
Season.
