On yesterdays episode of SiriusXM’s The Nikki and Brie Show,
Nikki & Brie Garcia unpack SummerSlam from Nikki’s highly
anticipated return from a broken ankle to Brie’s serious
injury. Brie details the moment the injury happened, the
extent of her fractured scapula, fighting through pain to
finish the story and her recovery timeline.
Brie Garcia details her injury (9:08-12:43)
Brie Garcia: I broke my scapula. It’s fractured in two or
three spots.
Nikki Garcia: Three.
Brie Garcia: I think it’s three places, and it’s really hard
to break your scapula, which is really interesting, so it
just shows you a freak accident, which before I get into it,
I do want to say that it’s nobody’s fault. My injury, it’s
part of the business and wrestling. We all sign up knowing,
I mean, look at Nikki three months ago, broke her ankle in
ring, so we all go in there knowing you take that risk that
injury can happen. You never know when, never know what kind
of move or when your body, like when it just happens. So, I
did break it. I broke it, for all of you, yes, on the stairs
when I got the cannonball, but it was weird because when it
happened, I instantly knew.
Nikki Garcia: You could see it on your face.
Brie Garcia: Yeah. Well, I think everyone heard me scream in
a way you’ve never heard me scream before, but it’s like
what you said when you broke your ankle. You feel the fire,
but it was weird because I felt the fire, but I felt my body
tense up so much. Then it just was such sharp pains. I
haven’t been in that much pain in a long time. Nikki and I
are very interesting. I don’t know if it’s our people-
pleasing side or if it’s because we were athletes before,
and it’s in your head when you’re in that adrenaline,
because you get adrenaline no matter what when you’re
wrestling in front of a crowd. You get very high adrenaline.
I don’t know if that makes you feel like you can do
anything, you’re capable, so for me, it was like the refs
knew something was wrong and she’s like, you know, she came
up to me right after when I was selling on the ground before
I got put back in the ring. She was like, “Do we need to
call the match?” and in my head, in that moment, I’m like,
“Yeah, right. I am not going to let them call this match and
have all these women and Nikki not doing her comeback yet.”
I’m like, “I gotta get her in.”
Nikki Garcia: Well, now you know how I felt when I just kept
going because I knew the girls were in the back. I’m like,
“I can’t ruin it.”
Brie Garcia: Yeah, that’s exactly what was going through my
head. But I honestly don’t know how I went through it
because I was in so much pain even when I got put in, and
everyone, I was starting to smarten up to it once we could
catch our breaths and I finally was starting to say
something, but the ref kept checking on me because the
doctors speak to her and Triple H, everyone’s speaking to
her through her headphones, so they were checking up on me
and they kept asking me to stay out, but I kept coming back
in. Now granted, I missed some big moves and we all had to
readjust on the fly. You know what I mean? Because I was
telling Nikki, I was laying in the hospital that night
feeling like I was the weakest link and made the match look
really sloppy for everyone, but I think what really did it
for me was at the end when I took the spinning X factor out,
because I kept taking moves out and I’m in my headache
because it was so painful. I’m like, “What am I doing? But I
got to keep going.” The doctors, they were crawling on the
ground trying to get to me.
Nikki Garcia: Dude, that video of you is so sad when you’re
coming in at the end for the hug after the match.
Brie Garcia: I couldn’t even get into the ring properly.
Brie Garcia on her recovery timeline & her surgeon’s advice
(19:55-20:54)
Brie Garcia: He was like, “You know, it’s really hard to
break your scapula.” He’s like, “No one does surgery on
scapulas. If you really want it, there is one doctor that
can do it,” but honestly, it’s like breaking your ribs in a
way. You just wait till they slowly heal, and so that’s what
I have to do, and with that, I know I have to get X-rays
every two weeks to make sure I am healing. I don’t start PT
for another two weeks, so they really want me to be
bedridden.
Nikki Garcia: We were texting, Carlow and I. I’m like, “So I
hear you got another patient.”
Brie Garcia: He’s probably mind blown.
Nikki Garcia: Oh, beyond mind blown. He can’t believe it.
Brie Garcia: Yeah, and then from there, you guys, I’m out
three to six months, so it all depends how my scapula heals.
I like to think us Bellas, our bones heal quick, but you
know, the scapula is kind of a tricky one.
