AS I SEE IT

Hypocrisy \hi- pa- kra- se\ n, pl Feigning to be what one is not or to believe what one does not... esp: the false assumption of virtue or religion (Webster's Dictionary, p.366)

We've heard for months from Eric Bischoff about the nature of the product offered by Titan Sports, how the product offered by his Time-Warner-Turner owned World Championship Wrestling was far more suitable for family viewing; and that even though ratings on Monday Night RAW had been higher than those of Monday Nitro for the better part of a year, how advertisers would soon flock from advertising on Monday Night RAW and other Titan programming to advertise on WCW.

So perhaps Mr. Bischoff could explain the following...

* Why Randy Savage performed in a skit at the end of the July 5th Monday NITRO where, in a "fit of anger" he physically abuses his real life girlfriend and valet "Gorgeous George". WCW tries to state that Savage went "over the line" and that the angle "wasn't part of the show"...until Torrie Wilson came clean on the WCW LIVE Real Audio show....

* Why Kevin Nash, a married man, is in skits where he is "involved" with two women in his locker room...

* Why Lodi and Lenny Lane portray every possible gay stereotype imaginable in the "Gaylords" skits, until Terry Bollea used his political stroke to end the skits....

* Why we saw the following from last week's Bret Hart column in the Calgary Sun... "Saw a strange sight yesterday. Dogs rolling in manure and loving every minute of it. For some reason it made me think of how the British Bulldog will do anything to work for the WWF."...

* Why we saw the Hummer "accident" skit...only a week after the tragic death of Owen Hart, and 6 months after the near-fatal car accident of Eddie Guerrero, and even less after the death of WCW referee Brady Boone....

* Why we saw the Nitro Girls recently doing a pole dance right out of your friendly local strip club...

* Why we keep hearing Konnan's constant references to "tossing salad", "peeling potatoes" and "strawberries"? I've even heard that some of Konnan's comments in Spanish during those promos couldn't be printed in this column...

Now I'm sure the predictable e-mails will come after this column appears from WCW lemmings. You know, the ones who insist WCW does no wrong, and that this column and the PWBTS website have an inherent hatred for WCW and certain of its staff. Perhaps they can explain away this excerpt from an editorial, again from the Canada-based SLAM Wrestling that Bret Hart's own Calgary Sun column runs on:

"Morals. What are morals? Are moral values and the refusal to back down on your stance regarding issues that you know are wrong? Are morals preaching for years about the lack of morals in professional wrestling, and then shilling out to a company for ratings and the almighty dollar?

Bret 'Hitman' Hart for years preached about the loss of morals in wrestling and in a a way he was right. Profanity is thrown around without a care, scantily clad women prance around showing their surgically enhanced 'puppies' and storylines involve homosexuals, dominatrixes, pimps and prostitutes. Bret pointed out that the world of wrestling, once a sport that relied on physical abilities more or as much as out of ring acting ability had been transformed into a world of vulgarity just to garner a few higher-ups with some extra cash.

This year we realized possibly how right Bret was. His own brother was tragically killed in an in-ring accident. An accident that resulted from some high-tech antics that went bad. Stuff you wouldn't see in Bret's world, where wrestling didn't revolve around ratings. We began to see that maybe Bret was the only one right all along.

On Monday night Bret showed his 'morals'. For the first time following his brother's death -- described by his own family as a 'sacrifice for the ratings' -- Bret would speak out. His company, WCW, had belittled the WWF for milking Owen's death for ratings and now Bret would speak out. In the Georgia Dome Bret's music hit, and out came The Hitman...at 8:57 Eastern Time."

I'm not insisting on political correctness...after all, I watched and enjoyed ECW during its heyday, which was and is as far from politically correct as you could get. Far from it. But I'd love to hear answers to the questions I've posed from Eric Bischoff.

To me it's crystal clear that World Championship Wrestling, Time-Warner-Turner, and its online staff shouldn't presume to make moral judgements about Titan Sports and what it does until WCW starts getting its own house in order.

Its time for WCW to quit being hypocrites. If WCW intends to use anything possible to attempt to fight Titan Sports in the ratings war...then acknowledge it. Then prepare to take the heat that Titan does, and that ECW will no doubt start to do as it goes national in a few weeks.

Quit wrapping yourselves in a moral cloak, WCW. Because that cloak hasn't been cleaned in quite some time...and it's starting to smell.

Until next time.....
