AS I SEE IT 8/24: Helping a friend of independent wrestling

by: Bob Magee Would you help a friend with cancer?

A number of independent promotions in the central and eastern Pennsylvania area are... by joining forces to present a night of wrestling action to help a face well known to those of us that attend independent shows in the region, Terry Barr, in his battle against his own illnesses and his wife's battle against cancer.

Barr, a local music and wrestling promoter in Berks County, Pennsylvania for over 24 years, has been fighting health problems of his own...and of his wife. His wife has suffered from cancer since 1998, and is no longer employed or insured by her employer for 21 years. Both Terry and his wife are taking monthly medications, running up doctor and hospital bills and expenses, and badly need the help of wrestling fans in the Northeast.

I've seen Terry at so many shows I've lost count, as he's led the IWA Championship Wrestling ringcrew based out of Reading, PA, at what seems like a thousand small and large wrestling shows for promotions that our readers know very well...and a lot that you don't. He's always had a nice and easy manner, and has been friendly to all fans that see his familiar face.

In order to benefit this person who has helped make so many wrestling shows possible, a number of independent wrestling promotions will combine for one night, as on Saturday, October 9th, at the Legendary Hamburg Fieldhouse in beautiful Hamburg, PA will host Indymania II: The Battle Against Cancer.

The venue is well known by long-time wrestling fans (and I do mean LONG time fans) as the regular venue for syndicated WWWF TV tapings seen all across the northeastern United States.

The show will feature several WWF/E, WCW and ECW talent including Bam Bam Bigelow (with manager Doc Diamond), Headshrinker Samu, The Chair Swinging Freak Ballz Mahoney, the legendary Jack Victory, former WWF Hardcore Champion Bobcat, as well as Tough Enough star Greg Matthews and his Tag Team partner, Rockin' Rebel.

To open the evening's entertainment, the Uncle $am Band will do a concert prior to the event with doors opening at 6:00 pm, and Indymania starting at 7:00 pm. Joining in the event will be soap opera star Robyn Griggs. Robyn played Stephanie Hobart on ABC's One Life To Live and Maggie Corey on NBC's Another World. Griggs will be acting as a Special Guest Ring Announcer and posing for pictures with fans during intermission, along with many of the wrestling stars appearing.

There is going to be a Celebrity Auction taking place as well, with 100% going to help the family. Many wrestlers, including former WCW Horseman leader James J. Dillon and Nikita Koloff, have donated autographed pictures and merchandise for the auction.
